BRAVE FACE

The inspiring WWII Memoir of a Dutch/German Child

During the Hunger Winter at the end of WWII, Dutch families in the Hague and nearby experienced extreme hunger and all that goes with that: dysentery, tuberculosis, and starvation sickness. Many people died. The streets were empty; cleaning supplies were unavailable; people just waited and hoped that the misery would pass. But, they had no idea about when it would.

Currently, we are not at war, but there are some similarities between then and now. The streets are pretty empty; toilet paper is hard to come by; Clorox wipes are largely unavailable. We find ourselves living in fear. And, we are waiting, hoping this season will soon pass.  We don’t know when that will happen.

Until then, we isolate ourselves. We order groceries on line. We sanitize, keep our hands away from our faces, and wash our hands frequently. And, to stay sane, we count our blessings. Family, friends, food, shelter, and internet.

By the way, if you can’t obtain disinfecting wipes, here is video about an alternative that is less expensive and more effective at killing virus. Just use it to disinfect anything except cloth—it will ruin that.
