BRAVE FACE

The inspiring WWII Memoir of a Dutch/German Child

Many years ago, my eldest sister, Corrie, told me that she’d been to hear Dr. L.F.C. Mees speak. He was our family physician for most of our growing-up years, as well as a family friend. After the lecture, Corrie went forward to speak with him and he reacted in astonishment. Why?

Several years after WWII ended, Corrie became very ill. In fact, it was evident that she was dying. Dr. Mees recommended that, as a last resort, she have surgery. She did, but it did not help. In fact, she grew progressively weaker. Dr. Mees visited the home and sadly informed my parents that she would not make it.

The next day my father noticed that the famous faith healer, Greetje Hoffmans, was in town. He and my mother went to see her, taking along a photograph and all the money they had. She neither looked at the photo nor took the money, but told them to go home: their daughter would be well. When they arrived, Corrie was walking, albeit with help.

Dr. Mees could not believe his eyes. “Corrie Bisschop, is that you?”

“Yes, but now I am Corrie den Otter. And I have chidlren and grandchildren.”

“I can’t believe you survived! And for so long. Amazing!”
